What is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)? What do you do?

A PMHNP is an advanced practice registered nurse with a specialization in psychiatry. After completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and gaining more experience, they enter into a master's or doctoral program, and upon graduating, sit for board certification with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). In many states, including Washington and Oregon, PMHNPs are independent practitioners and evaluate, diagnose, treat and prescribe psychiatric medication.

What will my first appointment be like?

Initial appointments are between 60 and 90 minutes and are spent getting to know you, taking a thorough health and psychiatric history, and discussing goals of care. The providers spend time afterward reviewing the information and formulating a plan to present at your follow-up. Follow up appointments are between 20 and 30 minutes, and are more focused, with time spent evaluating symptoms, discussing medication optimization, and engaging in psychotherapy.
